Counterfactuals and Causation: Preferences on Belief Sets

چکیده

A modal language called hypothetical logic is presented in which the semantics of counterfactuals is captured by a new syntactic version of belief updating that incorporates reason maintenance; the latter is claimed necessary for a theory of counterfactuals. The logic is then applied to problems in causation. Unlike other systems for information change, events and time in this framework are represented at the object level so that causal connections expressed between complex event descriptions may be analyzed. The inclusion of time and events requires a treatment of the frame problem which is dealt with by way of the same principle of minimal change that is made use of in the updating operation. Within this language, a number of preferences on belief sets are then explored; these are chosen so that the coun-terfactual inferences which follow satisfy our pre-theoretic intuitions involving causal connections.

Explanatory Update Theory: Applications of Counterfactual Reasoning to Causation

A stratified view of causal reasoning is set forth; one in which the identification of counterfactual dependencies plays an important role in determining what sort of causal connection, if any, exists between two events named by a given pair of partial descriptions. A semantics for temporal counterfactuals in which events are represented at the object level is then formalized based on a syntact...

Causation and the Semantics of Counterfactuals

Semantics of counterfactuals is normally developed according to the principle of similarity, and the key point is to specify the notion of relative similarity. It can be seen in specific examples that causation plays a crucial role in determining the independence of particular facts and thus also in the measure of relative similarity. Counterfactual account of causation is briefly reviewed. Som...

Causal overdetermination for Humeans?

The paper argues against systematic overdetermination being an acceptable solution to the problem of mental causation within a Humean counterfactual theory of causation. The truthmakers of the counterfactuals in question include laws of nature, and there are laws that support physical to physical counterfactuals, but no laws in the same sense that support mental to physical counterfactuals.

Metaphysical Causation

There is a systematic and suggestive analogy between grounding and causation. In my view, this is no coincidence: grounding and causation resemble one another because grounding is a type of causation. I defend the identification of grounding with metaphysical causation from some initial objections, and I draw on the causation literature to explore connections between grounding and counterfactua...
